Originally a series of Jordi Savall's recordings were released on the ASTREE label. Later, Savall himself launched ALIA VOX and released new recordings as well as an LP edition of F. Couperin's Viols, the great masterpiece of Savall's ASTREE debut, recorded in 1975.
The first suite consists of seven pieces and has a nostalgic character, written in the French style. The beauty of the gavotte movement, for example, is so beautiful that it makes one shudder. The magnificent passacaille (or chaconne) at the end is nothing short of magnificent. The second suite consists of four pieces, and this one is rather Italianate. The third piece, "Funeral," is a masterpiece filled with serene tension. The final piece, "White Shirt," is an immaculate piece requiring superb technique. Savall, Koopman and Maurette's superb performance here is remarkable!
