皮耶斯出生於葡萄牙里斯本，五歲即登台演出，七歲時就能公開演奏莫札特鋼琴協奏曲。她曾就讀里斯本音樂學院，學習作曲、音樂理論和聲歌手樂史，後來前往德國慕尼黑、漢諾威等地學習。
皮耶斯1970年在布魯塞爾舉辦的貝多芬誕辰二百周年音樂比賽中奪魁，開始蜚聲國際，她擅長演繹包括巴哈、貝多芬、舒曼、舒伯特、莫札特、布拉姆斯、蕭邦等古典和浪漫主義作曲家的作品。
皮耶斯2012年至2016年在比利時滑鐵盧舉辦大師課，並發起項目培養年輕音樂家。
皮耶絲最熱中演出的大多數是室內音樂，尤其是當她1989年開始與法國小提琴家杜梅搭檔合作演出後，兩人之後陸續在西班牙、比利時、瑞士及法國等地巡迴，此時皮耶絲已是DG專屬的錄音藝人，並留下多張室內樂的錄音。皮耶絲的鋼琴音色細緻自然，旋律線條自然而不做作，在輕盈的架構中構築出動人的音樂語法，其演出相當具有特色及說服力量。英國的樂評人Bryce Morrison曾說，皮耶絲有著象徵著肯普夫、艾德溫．費雪，以及柯爾托等舊時代偉大鋼琴家的精神。
This 2026 vinyl reissue from Deutsche Grammophon / Enrich Music features the acclaimed trio of pianist Maria João Pires, violinist Augustin Dumay, and cellist Jian Wang performing two of Mozart’s most celebrated chamber works: Piano Trios K. 496 and K. 502.
