This reissue of greatest hits, originally emerging in 1980, still stands out as one of the more satisfying summaries of the band's brief yet prolific career. While quibblers may point to the absence of this or that, the remaining tracks included here are never debated that should not be there.
The full-length 'Light My Fire' and 'Riders on the Storm' are wisely retained, alongside staples like 'Break on Through'. 'People Are Strange', 'Hello, I Love You' and 'L.A. Woman'. As always, Jim Morrison's dark charisma dominates, but it's Ray Manzarek's keyboards that give The Doors their unmistakable character. Thy imagining 'Light My Fire' without that swirling organ line. A live cut of 'Roadhouse Blues' adds toughness, 'The Ghost Song' reminds us of Morrison's posthumous reach and 'The End' still carries the same haunting power that made it unforgettable in Apocalypse Now. No greatest hits package can please everyone, but this one revels in the essence of The Doors: part psychedelia, part blues, part California mysticism. This is the obvious greatest hits to have from this iconic band, a selection that is truly essential to any fan of classic 60s and 70s rock.
