The Moscow Chamber Orchestra, founded by Rudolf Barshai in 1959, was the first orchestra of its kind in Russia and instantly became hugely popular. Its tours were an equal success both at home and overseas, and it sold an impressive number of records. Mozart was the most frequently performed composer on their concert programs and in their studio recordings. The Mozart works heard here, “A Musical Joke” and the 20th Symphony were made in 1972 and 1973.
