The album blends rock 'n' roll and Latin pop and was inspired by a trip to El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Columbia, where part of her luggage was stolen that contained all the lyrics she had been working on for her new album.
Dónde Están Los Ladrones? was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards; it won the Lo Nuestro Award for Pop Album of the Year at the 11th Annual Lo Nuestro Awards. At the 1999 Billboard Latin Music Awards, it won Pop Album of the Year by a Female Artist,[
Commercially, the album was a success, selling more than 1 million copies within its first month of release. Additionally, the album peaked at No. 131 on the U.S. Billboard 200, and topped the Top Latin and Latin Pop Albums charts. The album received numerous record certifications in various countries, including a platinum certification in the United States and a triple-platinum certification in Shakira's native Colombia.
