Led by vocalist-bassist Emily Sera, and completed by guitarists Darius Oon, Lorenzo Romero and drummer Bruce Dylan Tan, Coming Up Roses combine elements of pop, grunge, heavy metal and shoegaze – crafting songs that balance the worlds of child-like innocence and idealism with the revelations that come with adulthood.
The ‘Waters’ mini-album was originally released in the summer of 2018 and brought much acclaim for the young quartet, with the band playing international festivals like ASEAN Music Showcase Festival and Music Matters Live. Other notable performances from the band include Fred Perry Subculture, Baybeats Festival, Dreamwaves Online, DreamGaze Worldwide II and opening for UK indie band Fur. Coming Up Roses is one of the most active and sought-after bands within the Singapore indie music scene.
The mini-album touches on themes that come with the experience of entering adolescence. Opening with the atmospheric guitars of A1 “Fall”, the band ponders upon the feelings of loss before jumping headfirst into the energetic and angry single A2 “Lies”, featuring searing guitar lines and pounding drums.
This is followed by the sweet and saccharine love song A3 “Sky”, whose chiming guitars are reminiscent of bands like Airiel. The mini-album is bookended by the highlight of the band’s live repertoire, B1 “Waters”, a 5-minute sonic adventure with extended noise sections and feedback, with the protagonist despondently contemplating over her future.
This vinyl release also features two additional live versions of B2 “Sky” and B3 “Waters” recorded at a show at Singapore record store Retrophonic Records
